John Adams on atheism

I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce and agriculture in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain.

We’re in a war, dammit! We’re going to have to offend somebody!

It must be felt that there is no national security but in the nation’s humble acknowledged dependence upon God and His overruling providence.

Atheism turns out to be too simple. If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning…
