John Irving on motivation and goals

Never confuse faith, or belief — of any kind — with something even remotely intellectual.

Life forces enough final decisions on us. We should have the sense to avoid as many of the unnecessary ones as we can.

To each other, we were as normal and nice as the smell of bread, we were just a family. In a family even exaggerations make perfect sense.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Do, or do not. There is no ‘try.’

Never give in—never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.
