D. H. Lawrence on liberty

We’ve got to live. No matter how many skies have fallen.

And what’s romance? Usually, a nice little tale where you have everything As You Like It, where rain never wets your jacket and gnats never bite your nose and it’s always daisy-time.

The great virtue in life is real courage that knows how to face facts and live beyond them.

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Thomas Jefferson1743–1826Letter to William Stephens Smith (13 November 1787). Manuscript at the Library of Congress.

Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.
