Stephen Crane on hope

Do not weep, maiden, for war is kind.
Because your lover threw wild hands toward the sky
And the affrighted steed ran on alone,
Do not weep.
War is kind.

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, “Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter—bitter,” he answered;
“But I like it
“Because it is bitter,
“And because it is my heart.”

The cold passed reluctantly from the earth, and the retiring fogs revealed an army stretched out on the hills, resting.

A leader is a dealer in hope.

We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.

Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.
