Percy Bysshe Shelley on sleep

Revenge is the naked idol of the worship of a semi-barbarous age.

Gold is a living god and rules in scorn,
All earthly things but virtue.

Love’s very pain is sweet,
But its reward is in the world divine
Which, if not here, it builds beyond the grave.

When I woke up this morning my girlfriend asked me, ‘Did you sleep well?’ I said ‘No, I made a few mistakes.’

A few hours of mountain climbing turn a villain and a saint into two rather equal creature. Exhaustion is the shortest way to equality and fraternity, and liberty is added eventually by sleep.
